Our Process

How Water Filtration & Softening Works

Five clear steps from water testing to system installation and ongoing support.

Water Quality Testing & Analysis

We collect a water sample at your main water line and test it for hardness (measured in parts per million of calcium and magnesium), sediment, chlorine, iron, pH, and other parameters. Results guide the system design. Hard water over 120 ppm usually benefits from softening; sediment over 5 microns often requires pre-filtration. Chlorine and odor issues call for activated carbon filters.

Testing includes lab-grade hardness analysis, written report with contaminant breakdown and recommended treatment method, pricing estimate for all equipment options (basic, standard, premium), and timeline for installation if you approve.

What We Test For

  • Water hardness (calcium & magnesium levels)
  • Sediment and particulate matter
  • Chlorine and chemical taste/odor
  • Iron content and mineral deposits
  • pH levels and water acidity
  • Total dissolved solids (TDS)

System Selection & Equipment Specifications

Once testing is complete, we review filtration options. A home with hard water might combine a water softener (ion exchange) with a whole-home sediment filter and carbon filter. A home with mainly chlorine odor might use point-of-use reverse osmosis for drinking/cooking water plus a whole-home carbon filter for the rest. We specify equipment flow rates, bed sizes, and control types appropriate for your household size and water usage.

Equipment selection matched to your test results, capacity calculated for peak household demand, choice of manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic systems, and explanation of regeneration frequency and operating costs.

System Options We Offer

  • Whole-home water softeners (ion exchange)
  • Sediment filters for particulate removal
  • Carbon filters for chlorine and odor
  • Reverse osmosis systems for drinking water
  • Iron and sulfur removal systems
  • Multi-stage combination systems

Plumbing Integration & Installation Planning

Before we order parts, we inspect your water entry point, locate shutoff valves, and plan the layout. We identify the best location for the filter vessel (usually a basement, utility room, or garage) and route incoming and bypass lines accordingly. We ensure your water heater gets filtered water, plan for proper drainage of backwash during regeneration, and coordinate with your existing hot water system.

Site survey and blueprint of system placement, coordination with water heater and main plumbing line, arrangement of bypass valves to allow filter maintenance without cutting water supply, and preparation schedule (if replumbing is needed).

Installation Planning Checklist

  • Water entry point inspection and access
  • Optimal location for filter equipment
  • Bypass valve placement and routing
  • Drain line access for regeneration
  • Electrical requirements for controls
  • Integration with existing water heater
Schedule Site Survey

Equipment Installation & Pressure Testing

Installation day begins with a complete system shutdown at your main water shutoff. We cut into the main water line, install inlet and outlet fittings, connect the softener or filter vessel, route drain lines to a safe discharge point (laundry sink, basement drain, or exterior downspout), and pressurize the system. We test for leaks, verify water pressure (we aim for 40–60 psi downstream), and run water through all fixtures to flush debris and prime filters.

Inlet and outlet line installation with proper shutoff and bypass, drain line placement and venting (per code, no siphon potential), pressure gauge installation for monitoring, and initial system backwash and priming.

Installation Process

  • Main water line connection and shutoff
  • Filter vessel and softener installation
  • Bypass valve and control installation
  • Drain line routing and code compliance
  • System pressurization and leak testing
  • Initial backwash and system priming

Homeowner Training & Maintenance Handoff

Before we leave, we walk you through the system: how to check salt levels (if softener), when to order filter cartridges, what to listen for during regeneration cycles, and how to read your water meter. We provide a maintenance schedule card, show you how to manually regenerate or backwash if needed, and schedule your first follow-up inspection at 30 days. Most homeowners need no intervention—the system runs on its own cycle—but we're available if questions arise.

System operation walkthrough (regeneration schedule, bypass operation, salt refill if applicable), filter cartridge replacement timing and part numbers, maintenance reminder card and your technician's direct contact info, and 30-day follow-up inspection at no additional cost.

Training & Support Included

  • Complete system operation training
  • Maintenance schedule and reminders
  • Filter replacement timing and ordering
  • Salt level monitoring (for softeners)
  • 30-day follow-up inspection
  • Direct technician contact for questions

Water Filtration Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions About Water Filtration & Softening

Hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium minerals. Over time, these minerals build up in pipes, water heaters, and appliances, reducing efficiency and shortening lifespan. Hard water also reduces soap effectiveness, leaves spots on dishes, and can make hair and skin feel dry. Most Central Florida homes have water hardness between 150–300 ppm, well above the ideal 60–120 ppm range.

Water softeners use ion exchange: hard water passes through a resin bed filled with sodium-charged beads. The calcium and magnesium ions swap places with sodium, softening the water. Periodically, the resin regenerates by flushing with a brine (salt and water) solution, removing the trapped minerals and recharging the beads. The whole cycle is automatic and takes 2–4 hours.

Modern water softeners add minimal sodium—typically 50–100 mg/liter for softened water. The amount depends on your starting hardness; very hard water requires more sodium to soften. If you're sodium-sensitive, we recommend a point-of-use reverse osmosis system for drinking water, while softening the rest of the home.

A water softener removes hardness minerals (calcium, magnesium) through ion exchange. A water filter removes sediment, chlorine, iron, taste, and odor through physical filtration (sediment filters) or absorption (carbon filters). Most homes benefit from both: a softener to handle hardness and a sediment/carbon filter to handle other contaminants.

Sediment filters typically last 6–12 months depending on water quality and household usage. Carbon filters last 6–9 months. Reverse osmosis membranes last 2–3 years. We include a maintenance reminder card so you'll know when to order replacements. We also offer filter subscription services for automatic delivery.

Softener installation requires cutting into your main water line, installing bypass and drain lines per plumbing code, and pressure testing. Most homeowners lack the tools and experience. Improper installation can damage your plumbing, void warranties, and create leaks. We handle the entire process to code and warranty our work.

Water flowing through filter media naturally causes slight pressure drop—typically 5–10 psi, which is acceptable. If you notice significant pressure loss, it usually means the filter bed is saturated and needs regeneration (softeners) or cartridge replacement (sediment/carbon filters). We show you how to recognize this and provide simple corrective steps.

Yes. Well water often contains sediment, iron, and sulfur, requiring pre-filtration and specialized treatment. Municipal water often has chlorine and taste issues. We test whatever source you have and recommend appropriate treatment. Many Central Florida homes rely on wells, and we have extensive experience tailoring filtration for well water chemistry.

Not always. A water softener alone solves hardness but doesn't remove chlorine, taste, or microscopic contaminants. A whole-home softener plus carbon filter handles most issues. Reverse osmosis is excellent for drinking and cooking water at the kitchen sink but is slow for whole-home use. The best approach depends on your test results and budget.

Costs vary widely based on system type and capacity, water chemistry, and equipment choice. A basic sediment and carbon filter system costs less than a full water softener with multiple stages. Premium systems with reverse osmosis and advanced controls represent the upper range. We provide a written quote after your free water test, with multiple options at different price points to match your budget and needs.

Properly installed water softeners are septic-safe. The brine discharge is minimal and biodegradable. However, if you have a well, large amounts of softened water returning to the same area can theoretically raise groundwater levels. We assess your situation and adjust the softener setting and drain line routing to prevent issues. Most Central Florida homes have municipal water or well systems designed for household wastewater.
